This is Lucas Calleja, a Trustee not only new to AMNT but also to his role of Member Nominee. Lucas, like many aspiring Trustees, was determined to do the very best he could for his scheme, but he needed to build his experience before he had the confidence to perform to his potential. 'How it started for me.'
I am a Global Commercial Graduate at British Airways and currently work in sales where I work on our distribution capability and transforming how we sell. Working at British Airways allows me to be in an international environment whereby I can use my languages and collaborate with teams across the world.
Whilst checking the performance of my contributions I noticed that a ballot for Member Nominated Director vacancy was occurring, and was lucky to have the support of my colleagues to go on the ballot and eventually fill the vacancy.
I was interested in becoming a trustee because I am passionate about financial awareness and people – I worried that as a graduate perhaps people would feel as though I was inexperienced but luckily my studies at university and strong interest in the topic shone through.

"Prior to my first meeting I probably worried too much…"
I spent hours and hours re-reading all of the meeting papers to ensure that I had memorised all of the minute details! The board were very nice and understanding and helped me through my first meeting, and above all the secretariat team had been great in helping me with all of my training and questions prior to the meeting.
If you are a new trustee – believe in yourself and take the time to ask questions about things that you aren’t sure about – there is no such thing as a bad question.

Now I have the ability to see the extent to which MNTs are able to promote the best interests of members collectively, which is a benefit to the wider business environment.
So far I have attended an AMNT conference and collaborated on a working paper on defined ambition schemes – both experiences which have assisted me to have a much broader understanding of the pension industry beyond the scheme of which I am a trustee.

Now I have the ability to see the extent to which MNTs are able to promote the best interests of members collectively, which is a benefit to the wider business environment.

"I thoroughly enjoy being a trustee and learning more about ways to best benefit members’ pots, but also how changes in regulation and the pension’s landscape can benefit wider society…"
The most fulfilling aspect of being a trustee is hearing more pensions conversations being started – it is important for all of us to have a good understanding of the importance of pensions and particularly making responsible decisions about one’s pension.
If you are interested in being a trustee then go for it! There is a lot of learning, but if you are passionate about pensions it will be enjoyable.

Our members cover a wide spectrum of pension provision including Defined Benefit, Defined Contribution and Hybrid schemes. This range of knowledge and experience is used to support existing and new member nominated trustees in a secure, confidential and friendly environment.
Training
The Association offers a variety of training events, in collaboration with our sponsors, from half day briefings on topics such as risk management to day-long conferences with keynote speakers and trustee focussed breakout groups. At these sessions you will be in the company of other member nominated trustees and able to share your experiences, dilemmas and challenges, as well as learning from pensions industry experts.
Networking
In joining the Association you will become part of a unique organisation which gives you access to MNTs across the UK from a variety of pensions schemes and with a range of experiences of being a trustee. The Association holds regular conferences and other events at which you are encouraged to network with your fellow trustees and to discuss issues of common concern. All of our events are free to attend.
