The Pensions Regulator’s updated data reporting guidance, published in 2010, encouraged trustees to regularly review both common and scheme specific data. It was a good start in getting the basics of data quality right.

However, UK pension schemes will need to have high quality data as it is set to be key for trustees and sponsors going forward. More needs to be done.

Having complete and accurate data will help trustees get to the source of all benefit calculations, allow for further automation, reduce the risk of errors and at the same time provide accurate member data for the Pensions Dashboard and GMP equalisation.

For sponsors, improving data not only improves the accuracy of the benefits being paid to members but creates an efficient clean platform to introduce new options and engage with members around the choices available to them.
