Book Launch for The Rise of the Working Class Shareholder

Tuesday 23 October, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The School of Law at King’s College, London, would like to invite you to a book launch for Prof David Webber, The Rise of the Working Class Shareholder (Harvard UP 2018)

Click here  to reserve a place for 6pm, Tuesday, 23rd of October at King’s. Prof Webber’s book is an incredibly powerful, informative account of strategies used by US unions and pension funds to push corporate reform, which could be used to build on the initiatives already seen in the UK by the AMNT and the TUC.

This is definitely an important topic: Theresa May’s government has just passed a new UK Corporate Governance Code where companies will have to comply or explain from 1 January with worker representation options, including (at least) one worker elected to the board (p.5) - and it’s clear that labour can use its capital to influence meaningful steps. At Labour conference, John McDonnell also said Labour will push to “mobilise shareholder power to demand companies uphold basic tax justice standards”, noting “institutions from churches to trade unions and pension funds have large scale shareholdings” with the “intention to bring together these organisations to launch a shareholder campaign.” This book gathers a mass of experience, in a very short space, that could become increasingly important for governance, social rights, tax, environmental sustainability and more.
