The trustees of defined benefit schemes are facing a huge challenge. While assets have performed reasonably well over the past five years, funding levels have not improved and sponsors are continuing to have to make substantial contributions into schemes. To compound the problem, many schemes are becoming cashflow negative as benefit payments start to exceed contributions.
In order to close their funding gaps, pension schemes will need to consider all of the options available to them - including previously under-exploited investment strategies.
From an investment standpoint, schemes effectively have three options: i) to look at different beta and consider strategies including LDI, smart beta and factor investing; ii) to rethink active management and consider techniques including benchmark-relative, dynamic asset allocation and absolute return; or, iii), to look at accessing the illiquidity premia that exist within private markets.
